InactiveDear Fellow Trustees,
I am not a gambler who throws a dice and hopes for the best. I am a chess player who plots moves with a plan.
It pains me to vote ‘no’ today. But I will continue to vote against any future measures for last minute changes or requests, from fellow trustees or the administration. Emergency meetings should only be reserved for unforeseeable circumstances.
I will not dwell on what should have been planned for in December. Instead, I would like to request the administration to start making the plan for the last 9-weeks period and the summer, NOW. Good plan is not made within days. It takes weeks if not months.
Learning loss, cheating, missing kids, mental health, graduation requirement, keeping social distance measures when the classroom gets crowded, adjusting for the smaller remote learning size, advocating for vaccination (the survey result of 70% staff acceptance is not applaudable) … The list of things we need to think about goes on and on.
We should not live by the moment. Plan for the future.

MemberDr. Xiao,
I was surprised and feel frustrated by your no vote yesterday. I have appreciated your reverence for science and your focus on vaccination opportunities. I do understand that parents should have planned ahead. But is it more important to teach those parents a lesson? Or to keep our students and staff safe? Unfortunately some people will not believe the reality of COVID19 until they personally impacted. I feel that now the circle of impact is now getting closer to home for many. I am starting to see those who were deniers either contract COVID themselves or have someone in their circle be impacted by COVID. With that in mind, I would like to still reserve the right to make adjustments, as needed. I will not hold moral high ground over safety of staff and students. The numbers on both our dashboard and the county dashboards were quite concerning yesterday.
I would like to see proactive planning going into the last 9 weeks and as I have said previously; would like to start seeing the district plan for compensatory education WITH educators and families. No more guessing and checking. The path to educational recovery needs to include stakeholders.

InactiveTrustee Harrison,
It’s not about those parents. They can switch to virtual whenever they feel unsafe. It’s about us. We got mired down in endless discussions during board meetings without any actions and plans to keep the schools open and safe. There are families who have no choice but to send their kids to schools no matter how dire the situation is out there. And many staff have to choose between resigning or coming back to school in person.
For now, any last minute adjustment that has real impact, each local campus shall do what fits, in my opinion.
